Orthodontics

Orthodontics is responsible for the study, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of anomalies in the shape, position, relationship and function of dentomaxillofacial structures. Its exercise results in achieving an optimal state of dental health and aesthetic harmony through the use and control of different types of forces.
Orthodontics can handle issues such as teeth crowding (mild or severe) and hereditary factors of malpositions that can cause functional as well as aesthetic problems. Some consequences of abnormal tooth positions can be: muscular pains caused by the jaw, teeth that are irregularly worn and difficulties to maintain a good oral hygiene.
The patient should have his or her first orthodontic appointment at 7 or 8 years of age, so they can evaluate their dental replacement and process the growth and relation of the jaw bones. If any anomaly is detected, the case can be treated with preventive orthodontics using equipment that accompanies the child during its growth to guide the correct proportion of his or her bones and thus avoiding more serious future problems.
The elaboration of the appropriate treatment plan in a case of crowding is done after deciding if the lack of space can be solved conservatively, increasing the length of the arch, or if the case requires extractions.
Today, new materials and methods are helping orthodontics achieve excellent results in less time, correcting both functionality and aesthetics and achieving smiles that express confidence and security.
